Peace Strengthens: They knew I had it in me.

More About Biology

Perhaps the greatest accomplishment that Biology students at Peace College achieve combines what they have learned with personal creativity in the form of undergraduate research.

Peace students engage in research opportunities on and off campus. Some recent examples include publication of research papers co-written by students. Britt Adams '01 and Kimberly Beane '04 were co-authors with Dr. Joe Wolf of a paper “Regulation of Nitrite Reductase in Ochrobactrum anthropi,” which describes the regulated expression of a gene involved in nitrogen metabolism. Their paper has been accepted by the international Journal of Basic Microbiology for publication in January 2006.

Lisa Carter '01 and Maija Tabor '02 wrote with Dr. Lisa Bonner a paper describing their research concerning the effects of pollution on amphibians. It was published in the July 2002 issue of the scientific journal Environmental Health Perspectives.

Also, some of our students participate in the NCSU Summer Research Internship Program, which is sponsored by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. Each year some of our students present their research at the annual meeting of the Collegiate Academy of the North Carolina Academy of Sciences. In fact, for four years in a row, a Peace student has taken first place in the biotechnology and molecular biology section of the academy's statewide research competition.
