Author Dava Sobel Speaks Tuesday at Peace College
Dava Sobel, author of "Longitude," "Galileo's Daughter" and other books about science, will speak at Peace College on Tuesday night.
The event, which is free and open to the public, will be held at 7 p.m. in Kenan Recital Hall on the Peace College campus. The talk will be followed by a reception where Sobel will sign copies of her books.
Sobel's talk will be centered on her most recent book, "The Planets," which was the summer reading assignment for entering Peace College students in the fall. Sobel is appearing at Peace as the college's 2008 Goodmon Scholar.
In 30 years as a science journalist, Sobel also has written for magazines such as Audubon, Discover, Life and The New Yorker. Sobel received the 2001 Individual Public Service Award from the National Science Board "for fostering awareness of science and technology among broad segments of the general public." Also in 2001, the Boston Museum of Science gave her its Bradford Washburn Award for her "outstanding contribution toward public understanding of science, appreciation of its fascination, and the vital role it plays in all our lives."
In addition to her Tuesday night talk, Sobel also will meet with Peace students in two sessions to discuss how to move into writing careers. She will also meet with a biology class.
