Peace College Celebrates Move-In Day on Saturday
RALEIGH (Aug. 13, 2008) - Peace College begins the 2008-09 academic year on Saturday with first-year students moving into their residence halls.
Move-In Day begins at 8 a.m. Saturday, with student, faculty and staff, alumnae and Parents Council volunteers helping new students move into their homes at Peace. Move-in activities are scheduled to end at noon, with orientation sessions in the afternoon.
"This is always an exciting time at Peace," President Laura Carpenter Bingham said. "The entire campus community comes together to help our new students move into their rooms and join in their excitement as they launch their college careers."
Orientation activities on Saturday include a matriculation ceremony in which Peace officially welcomes the first-year class to the college. The ceremony will be held at 5 p.m. on the College Green in front of Main Building and will be followed by a picnic on the lawn.
Move-In Day is the official kick-off of Peace's orientation program for first-year, returning and transfer students. The program provides students and their families with comprehensive sessions that promote positive academic and social transitions into the Peace community.
As part of the orientation program, new students will meet on Monday in small groups with peer educators, faculty and staff members to discuss their summer reading assignment, "Enrique's Journey," a Pulitzer Prize-winning book by journalist Sonia Nazario. It describes the harrowing journey taken by a Honduran teenager to find his mother who left when he was 5 years old to work in the United States. Nazario will speak at Peace on Oct. 13.
Returning Peace students begin moving into their residence hall rooms on Sunday. Classes begin on Wednesday.
