Counseling Services
Confidentiality
All communications between you and your counselor are confidential and are not released outside the Counseling Center without your signed consent. Releases of information forms are available for this purpose. Your Counseling Center records are not part of your University record and no one outside the Center has access to them. In keeping with professional standards, counselors may consult with other Wellness Center staff including the Director of Student Health, the campus physician, and/or the Director of Disability Services for the purpose of providing the best service to you. Legal and ethical exceptions to confidentiality are as follow:
1) When there is clear and present danger of harm to either yourself or others, we may act on your behalf by arranging hospitalization and notifying a parent or emergency contact person;
2) If you disclose actual or possible current child abuse or neglect, or the abuse, neglect or exploitation of a disabled adult in need of protection, we must report the information to the appropriate department of social services;
3) If we are ordered by a court of law to release information about you.
4) If you are 17 years old or younger, or have been referred as part of a university disciplinary or administrative matter, there are further exceptions to the confidentiality policy which your counselor will discuss with you.
Privacy Statement
While we respect our students desire to maintain their privacy, we cannot prevent students being seen entering or exiting the Counseling Center, nor protect against students encountering each other as they come for appointments. If it is important to you that no one else on campus know you are seeing a counselor, please contact us and we will assist you in finding an off campus referral.
Statement on Diversity
The Counseling Center staff strives to create a safe environment that welcomes, respects, and appreciates all who use our services. We are committed to honoring diversity in its many forms, including: race, color, ethnicity, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, physical and mental abilities, religious belief and socio-economic status.
Electronic Mail (E-Mail) Communication
The Counseling Center discourages the use of email communication between counselors and clients for purposes other than making an appointment. Email is not a secure medium and confidentiality cannot be guaranteed, nor is it an appropriate means of communicating urgent or emergency messages. The Counseling Center staff does not provide counseling through email.
