Examples of Disabilities Accomodations

Students who have a disability may be eligible for a variety of accommodations appropriate to their disability. Accommodations are determined on a case by case basis by the Director of the Disability Resource Center and are based upon the diagnostic determination as reported in the documentation submitted by the student.

Examples of appropriate and reasonable academic accommodations may include:

  • Reduced course load (9-10 credits for the first two semesters)
  • Accommodations on placement and competency tests
  • Pre-advising to assist the student in balancing and limiting course load
  • Priority registration
  • Extra time on tests
  • Taking tests in a separate, distraction-free environment
  • Alternate test format such as use of a computer, tape recorder, or oral testing
  • Permission to mark answers on tests rather than scantrons or computerized format
  • Tape recording of lectures
  • Use of peer note-takers, copies of professor notes, or electronic access to them
  • Preferential seating away from distractions
  • Use of Assistive Technology, such as the Kurzweil Reader, Audio Books etc.

Dietary, Parking, and Residential Accommodations

Any student whose disability requires dietary, parking, residence accessibility accommodations must request those accommodations in the same manner in which they request academic accommodations:  by registering with the Disability Resource Center and requesting those accommodations during the registration process.
