Campus Announcements for April 6, 2009

Etiquette Dinner to be Held This Evening

Career Services in partnership with the Alumnae Association will present the annual Etiquette dinner for our seniors this evening. Sixty Peace students, 28 alumnae and eight guests will participate in tonights event. The Networking Reception will be held in Main Parlor and will then move to Belk Dining Hall for dinner. This year's dinner is sponsored by Progress Energy and the Alumnae Board and E-mentors (alumnae).

Alumnae and special guests are volunteering to participate, and to be a role model and career advocate for our students. Which is needed this year, more than ever, to assist our students to be prepared, confident and assertive to enter this very competitive labor market. This event has been completely funded by private donations from e-mentors, alumnae, alumnae board members and private corporations. Jane Hight McMurry, author of the Etiquette Advantage, will be our presenter and will have her books available to sell after the dinner.

Contribute to 5k run for in memory of Justin Straus
From Heather Lee: Justin's lifelong (except for the first 14 months) friend James turns 14 on April 18th. James' "very good friend" Maddis surprised him with the birthday gift of having a fundraiser in memory of Justin for the Chordoma Foundation. This was in response to a comment she heard James make after leaving a general fundraiser for cancer, "Someone outta do something like this for Justin and chordoma." Mattis took the idea and "ran with it" (pun intended). Maddis' Mom Debbie Collier is helping organize things as is James' Mom Patty but the kids are the ones helping with logistics. James and Maddis spent a few hours here today making posters, selecting photos and just hanging out with us.

I don't know about you but when I was 14, I wasn't so selfless. Whether or not you can join us, please help us "spread the word" and please consider making a contribution in honor of James' birthday gift request to honor his friendship with Justin. You can go online to the Foundation website (in honor of James Becherer) or write "James' 5k Partay" in the memo line of your check and mail it to Chordoma Foundation, PO Box 4562, Greensboro, NC 27404. http://www.chordomafoundation.org/

Peace Hosts a Successful Open House

Congratulations to the Admissions and Financial Aid Offices on an extremely successful Open House Friday. The day solidified the decision of dozens of high school seniors and juniors to attend Peace College. Sincere thanks to all the faculty, staff members and students who contributed their time to make the day so meaningful to these families.

Peace College Garden Club

The Garden Club held its first work day, planting more than 40 boxwoods by the front campus gates. More than a dozen faculty, staff and alumnae (and a few family members) assisted with the project. The next work day will be April 18, when the group will plant flowers in strategic areas. If you'd like to join the group, contact Randy Bass or just show up on the 18th. Contributions to cover the cost of flowers can be made to the Garden Club account.
