Student Showcase on Thursday
Peace College will hold its annual Student Showcase on Thursday. Students will spend the day sharing with each other and the Peace community their academic and artistic accomplishments. The "Student Showcase" will include research presentations, performances of music and dance, poetry readings and debates. Other highlights include student presentations of papers; cross-disciplinary creative projects and much more. Lunch will be served on the Peace Green, in front of Main Building, which will include various educational and fun activities. A full schedule of activities can be found at www.peace.edu.
Peace College Launches New Degree-Completion Program
The Peace College Board of Trustees has given approval for the College to launch a new Adult Degree Program to begin in Fall 2009. It is an intensive, accelerated Degree Completion program designed for adults. Although Peace College's traditional program is for women only, the Degree Completion program will be open to both women and men. The Evening program offers two degree-completion programs: Human Services and Business / Leadership - two degrees that can lead to a variety of career options.
With the faculty and trustee approvals of the new Degree Completion program, we will begin marketing the option immediately. In the next three weeks commercials will run on a number of local radio stations and print ads will be placed in seven area newspapers encouraging men and women who are interested to attend one of two information sessions (May 12 or 14). These commercials and ads are possible thanks to a donation that was restricted for marketing from a local foundation.
If you know of adults who may be interested in this accelerated degree option, have them contact Matt Green, Dean of Enrollment and Adult Programs.
Peace Team Ties for Third Place in Regional ‘HR Games’
A Peace College team tied for third place on Saturday among 28 teams in the Southeastern regional competition in the “HR Games,” a contest sponsored by the Society for Human Resource Management. The Peace “White Team,” made up of Nikki Marcom, Paulette Culp and Maureen Friece, tied for third place with the University of South Alabama. The “White Team” had won the North Carolina title in March.
Peace’s “Green Team,” made up of Paige Atkins, Lauren Rouse and Tracey Wright, placed tenth in the regional competition. For the first time, Peace entered a third team in the competition. That team placed 20th. The competition was held in Richmond, Va., in conjunction with the Southeast Regional Student SHRM Conference.
Peace is on Facebook
Peace College has a new “fan page” on Facebook. The page, which was launched on Friday, offers an online place where the College can share news of student and faculty/staff accomplishments, events on campus, profiles of interesting Peace people and programs. The fan page can display photos, videos and other content, offering people an interactive way for people to engage with the College and with people connected to it. You don’t need to be a member of Facebook to visit the page. If you’re a Facebook user, sign up as a fan to get regular updates. Please forward suggestions for profiles, stories and events for posting on the page to Mike Hobbs. See the page at http://www.facebook.com/pages/Raleigh-NC/Peace-College/64976863262

Peace Beats Meredith in RecycleMania
From Jessica Baxter: The RecycleMania results have been announced and we can say that we beat Meredith College. In addition to competing against Meredith, we competed in 3 categories, Grand Champion, Per Capita Classic and Waste Minimization. In Per Capita Classic, we competed to see which school could collect the greatest amount of recyclable material on average per person. We came in 86th out of 293 schools! Our final total was about 15.03 pounds per person over the entire 15-week competition. The winning school was McNeese State University with an average of 76.19 pounds per person over the course of the competition.
The second category we competed in was Waste Minimization. In this category we tried to create the least amount of waste per person. We came in 102nd out of 148 schools in this category. On average we created 64.06 pounds of trash person (over the course of 15 weeks).
The final category was Grand Champion. This is the percentage of your total waste that you recycle. We came in 119th out of 206 with a 23.47% recycling rate. We are well on our way to our 50% goal. We estimated our rate at about 10% during the trash audit held in the fall.
Health Services Seeking Donation of Crutches, Wheelchair
If you happen to have a pair of crutches you no longer need tucked away in your attic or storage and if you feel like recycling and donating them to Peace Health Services we would so appreciate your unwanted crutches. And if you happen to have a wheelchair in good working condition that you no longer need, we would love that too!
Wellness Center Seeking Food Pantry Donations
From Lisa Allred Draper: “Our food pantry is empty again! Thanks to everyone who has donated over the year. It is clearly needed on campus. We’ve filled it and emptied it five times already this year. We would like to have it stocked going into the summer! If you have any food items to donate, please bring them to the Wellness Center or call us and we’ll come and pick them up. Thanks!”
A Thank You for Blood Donations
Nurse Mari received the following thank you from Laura Shook-Marino of Rex Blood Services after the blood drive on April 14:
“Hi! Sorry for the delay, but it took a while for all the donors to process. However, you all had a wonderful blood drive! We registered 36 donors and collected 28 pints of blood this past Tuesday. This helps so many patients, and all of your time and great advertising efforts are greatly appreciated. I also really enjoyed talking to the Peace students. You all have a great bunch of donors there! Everyone was so enthusiastic about donating blood, and they all seemed to enjoy themselves as well.”
