Julie Lawson wins statewide civic engagement award
The North Carolina Campus Compact has awarded Julie Lawson, Peace’s director of leadership/service, the 2009 Civic Engagement Professional Award. The award recognizes a staff person at a N.C. Campus Compact member campus that has worked toward the institutionalization of service, created and strived towards a vision of service on their campus, supported faculty and students, and formed innovative campus-community partnerships. Lawson received the award last week in Davidson during the Campus Compact’s civic engagement administrator conference. One other person also received the award. N.C. Campus Compact is a coalition of colleges and universities collaborating to increase campus-wide participation in community and public service.
Please watch for news of a celebration of Julie’s award planned for later this week, and congratulate her when you see her!

Peace’s archaeological field school at Brunswick Town/Fort Anderson State Historic Site is holding a “Public Archaeology Day” on Saturday. The field school is a cooperative effort through Peace College, the Historic Sites Division of the N.C. Department of Cultural Resources, the N.C. State Office of Archaeology, and the Coe Foundation for Archaeological Research. The site is located near Southport. The field school, which includes six Peace College students and 16 other students from across the country, is being run by Dr. Vinnie Melomo and adjunct instructor and professional archaeologist Tom Beamon.
