Supporting A Successful Transition to Self-Sufficiency, with Dignity

William Peace University is pleased to open to the public our annual Lunch & Learn Series.

For the 2013-14 academic year, the series will feature both university faculty and visiting faculty, as well as guest researchers, lecturers and experts from across multiple majors, topics and industries.

February's Lunch & Learn will feature members from The Green Chair Project, a local-area nonprofit co-founded by Jackie Craig and Beth Smoot, in April of 2010.

Jackie and Beth are both trained as real estate stagers and in that work, they consistently observed that many people have too much "stuff" in their homes. Yet it is sometimes hard for people to part with their unused items because the items are still good and could be used by "someone". After seeing this again and again, the pair decided to start The Green Chair Project as a receptacle for those useful items. The Green Chair then makes the furnishings available at a low cost to individuals and families identified and referred to The Green Chair by its partner agencies. This allows the recipients to participate in a successful transition to self-sufficiency, with dignity, as they furnish their home and create nurturing environments for themselves and their families.

In addition, The Green Chair relies on an army of volunteers, without which it couldn't operate. They range from weekly regulars who oversee a "department", to middle school, high school and college students interested in community service, to church and professional groups, individuals and families who want to serve periodically in a meaningful way. These volunteers each contribute their time, ideas, muscle, vision and talents to evaluate, process and prepare the donated items and create a warm setting to welcome the clients The Green Chair is serving. The Green Chair is blessed to work with such a talented and generous group!

The event will include a bag lunch provided by Sodexo. Register early!
