Four-Year Baccalaureate University Expands Educational Offerings With The Addition Of The William Peace University Criminal Justice Program

RALEIGH, N.C. – William Peace University (http://www.peace.edu), a private four-year university located in downtown Raleigh, has announced that the institution has expanded its educational offerings with the addition of its criminal justice major. The William Peace University Criminal Justice Program will consist of interdisciplinary courses that will provide students with insight into the conditions – psychological and sociological – that lead to criminal behavior. Additionally, the program will cover components of the U.S. legal system as well as forensics.

The Criminal Justice Program is comprised of 39 hours. Students will be required to meet 18 hours of criminal justice core courses and nine hours of elective courses. Additionally, students will complete 12 hours toward The Raleigh Experience, which will provide a hands-on learning opportunity for students to work alongside area professionals in fields specifically related to criminal justice.

The Raleigh Experience will allow students in their senior year to complete an intensive, 40 hours per week co-op program. Through the program, students will be expected to work for three areas related to the criminal justice concentration, which includes advocacy and lobbying, governance, law, nonprofit administration, politics, policy research, and public administration. During that time, students will additionally rotate through three five-week practicums.

QUOTES:

“Whether it’s working for the FBI or assisting companies in protecting their private cyber material, our workforce has a growing demanded for employees educated in the field of criminal justice,” said Debra M. Townsley, Ph.D., president of William Peace University. “We are proud to announce the William Peace University Criminal Justice Program and the unique opportunity it will provide students through The Raleigh Experience. Students who pursue this major will gain firsthand experience in the field of criminal justice prior to graduation, positioning them as marketable candidates for future employers.”

RALEIGH, N.C. – William Peace University (http://www.peace.edu), a private four-year university located in downtown Raleigh, has announced that the institution’s campus magazine, The Peace Bulletin, has won the Grand Award by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) Southeast District III. Presented at the 2013 CASE District III Conference, The Peace Bulletin was recognized in the category of Design for Print and Digital Periodicals for its imagination, original approaches and execution excellence in the realm of graphic design. With more than 1,000 entries, the university was among only 55 recipients of the grand award recognition.

After undergoing an extensive redesign in early 2012, the summer 2012 issue of The Peace Bulletin unveiled a refined design approach which specifically highlighted the new university branding. Led by Ryan McGuire, graphic designer and Lauren Gerber, director of communications and outreach at William Peace University, the magazine shifted its focus to include an increased emphasis on faculty, students, staff and alumni-based stories as a way to recognize all those who play an integral role in promoting the mission and vision of the institution.

Committed to advancing and supporting educational and professional institutions throughout the Southeast, CASE District III focuses on enhancing the effectiveness of higher education. The organization’s efforts span across education and include alumni relations, fundraising initiatives, internal and external communications, marketing efforts and professional advancement.

“It is an honor to be recognized by CASE District III as a Grand Award recipient of the redesign efforts of our treasured campus magazine – The Peace Bulletin,” said Debra M. Townsley, Ph.D., president of William Peace University. “We could not be more proud of The Peace Bulletin redesign, as it truly stands as representation of our institution and the direction we are headed, while it continues to showcase the faces behind WPU and those who have left their mark on this great campus.”

High School Athletic Association State singles champion in 1981 and 1982. Recruited by former Peace College President S. David Frazier, Ph.D., and coached by the late Ruth Hopkins, she quickly became Coach Hopkins’ No. 1 singles player and was named an All-American Athlete by the National Junior College Athletic Association for Flight #1 Singles in 1984.

After helping the Giants maintain a winning legacy and graduating from Peace with an Associate of Arts degree, Hodges Barbera transferred to NC State University, where she attained a career doubles winning percentage of .737 and lettered in 1986-1987. During that year, she led the Wolfpack women’s tennis team with 16 wins in singles action, including a 6-1 record against Atlantic Coast Conference competition. Hodges Barbera contributed to a 16-3 slate in doubles that included three wins in the ACC tournament. In 1991, she received the North Carolina Junior Tennis Council Award given in honor of John Peddycord for contributions to N.C. Junior Tennis. Eight years later, Hodges Barbera was named a Mary Milam Lifetime Achievement Award winner for outstanding contributions to tennis in North Carolina. In 2008, she earned the Marilyn Sherman Spirit Award for extraordinary spirit in growing the game of tennis in the USTA Southern Section.

As an involved and engaged alumna, Hodges Barbera remains a sports enthusiast and an active member of the William Peace University Pacer Club, supporting the women’s tennis team and the athletics program. She remains a dedicated member of her class committee, helping raise funds through gifts made to The Loyalty Fund, the university’s annual fundraising campaign, and as a reunion coordinator.

“I am truly humbled to be an inductee into the William Peace University Athletics Hall of Fame,” said Hodges Barbera. “I will always hold dear the memories I have of playing tennis and the outstanding educational experience I received on this campus. All the loving care and support this institution has shown me over the years is much appreciated, and I have tried to return it in kind with contributing my part to assist the university in providing those experiences to its future student population.”

“We are pleased to announce that Mary Lloyd Hodges Barbera is the newest member of our Athletics Hall of Fame,” Debra M. Townsley, Ph.D., president of William Peace University. “She is a deserving honoree, as her career in tennis has been exemplary, and her accomplishments at this university remain impressive. We congratulate her on receiving this worthy honor and joining an illustrious list of previous winners.”

In this position, Denlinger will report to President Debra M. Townsley, Ph.D., and serve as a member of the senior cabinet to create institutional goals, priorities and policies, lead faculty, and implement and assess an innovative curriculum for the university. Denlinger worked briefly as a senior associate at the Schlechty Center for Leadership and School Reform before joining the Partnership on May 1, 2007. Prior to her position at Durham Public Schools, she was superintendent of Wilson County Schools from 1992 to 1997, preceded by working in the Wake County Public School District, where she started her career and served as an assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, a principal and a teacher. She received the Jay Robinson Leadership Award in 2006, given by the Public School Forum of North Carolina, in recognition of her deep commitment to helping all children.

"For decades, Ann Denlinger has been recognized as a committed leader for excellence in education in North Carolina, so I am pleased that she is assuming a bigger role in helping to lead our university in reaching the next level in the future," said Dr. Townsley. "It is an honor when one of our distinguished alumni agrees to serve in a key position at the university which she attended. I look forward to her contributions as she oversees dynamic transformations at our institution of higher learning."
