A Message from the President regarding response to coronavirus

Mar 12, 2020

William Peace University Community,

I am writing to share an update regarding our continued response to the novel coronavirus, known as COVID-19. The University has no known cases at this time. However, it is clear that the spread is increasing and we believe it is in the best interest of our students and the community to make significant changes in how we finish the semester. Our approach is guided by our intent to protect the health of our students, faculty and staff; to help slow the spread of the virus in our community; and to ensure the quality of the academic experience for our students.

Based on the current situation, and the health and safety of our students, the University has determined the following:

  • Traditional Students:  All on-campus classes will be suspended beginning Monday, March 16. Online/remote instruction for all classroom-based courses will begin the week of March 23 and continue for the remainder of the semester. Students’ last campus-based classes for the semester will conclude on Sunday, March 15.
  • School of Professional Studies Students:  Current on-line classes will continue as scheduled.  Campus-based, seated classes will move to on-line instruction on Monday, March 23.
  • Faculty and advisors will be communicating further details directly with students.
  • The campus will remain open and operational unless otherwise notified.
  • We will be postponing or cancelling large events for the immediate future. No decisions have yet been made regarding Commencement.
  • We are still evaluating the status of summer courses and May Term and will communicate decisions regarding those in the future.
  • William Peace University is ceasing non-essential travel for all employees.

As we all know, this situation is changing daily. Please be sure to watch for continued communications and updates. We will utilize email as our primary form of communication, but will also provide abbreviated updates via THIS website and other forms of digital communication.

I am certain many of you are disappointed by this news, as am I. These decisions were not made lightly as none of us want the Spring semester to conclude in this manner – especially for our seniors. However, we feel this is the best path forward for the safety and health of the campus community and community-at-large – it enables us to further reduce the risk of infection and spread, while relying on our incredibly talented faculty to bring their very best to an online format and enable all of our students to finish the hard work they have started.

I want to express my deep appreciation and thanks to the many members of our community, faculty, staff, students and alumni who continue to work diligently to help our great University move through this difficult season. Campus community members should pay attention to additional, specific student, faculty and staff communications over the next several days and stay up-to-date with additional information on the WPU website.

My confidence in our community is high and I know we will get through this – together.

With Peace,

President Ralph
