Adjusting to a Virtual World

Jul 1, 2020

The COVID-19 crisis has changed the way we face the world. No longer do we shake hands, go to restaurants, or participate in group gatherings. Founder’s Day, Alumni Weekend, and Graduation are all events that we look forward to gathering with engaging with our alumni and friends. How do we continue to engage with our alumni when there is a global pandemic?

At the start of this pandemic, the Office of Advancement wasted no time in adjusting to a virtual environment, from daily zoom meetings to online cocktail hours and virtual concerts, the Advancement Team has embraced this new virtual reality.

New Grad Toast

Unfortunately, COVID-19 has caused the University to postpone graduation. However, the WPU community still wanted to send our newest graduates out with a bang. On the evening of April 30, the Office of Advancement welcomed the Class of 2020 to the Alumni Association with a Virtual New Grad Toast. University Leadership, the Alumni Board, and other members of the WPU community all raised a glass to celebrate the Class of 2020.

1857 Virtual Mixer

The Office of Advancement also raised a glass to our 2020 Alumni Award recipients. Alumni Awards are traditionally a part of Alumni Weekend every April. However, this year we brought the celebration to our alumni through a Virtual 1857 Mixer and Alumni Happy Hour on Friday, April 17. The Office of Advancement proudly acknowledged our Alumni Award recipients who consisted of our Distinguished Alumni of the Year, Distinguished Service Award, Young Alumni of the Year, as well as introduced a new alumni award, the Professional Studies Alumni of the Year in honor of the School of Professional Studies 10th anniversary.

Porch Talks

As we embrace this new reality, the WPU Community has banded together to support our students, faculty and staff through multiple Front Porch Talks hosted by President Brian C. Ralph, Ph.D. The purpose of these virtual events is to provide updates on how the campus is responding to the COVID-19 pandemic and the current social climate.

WPU Faculty and Staff Giving Celebration

WPU has an amazing group of employees. So many of our faculty and staff members go above and beyond for William Peace University. A large portion of the Pacer Pantry is stocked and financed by WPU employees. During the first-ever Founder’s Day of Giving, over $4,000 in funds were given by WPU faculty and staff. In order to thank our wonderful faculty and staff for their financial commitment to our University’s mission, the Office of Advancement held our annual  giving celebration  virtually to recognize WPU’s generous faculty and staff.

Thankfully, the Advancement Office uses Almabase’s online platform, Alumni Connect, to engage our alumni and friends. Utilizing this tool has made the transition to virtual events seamlessly. Recently, the Office of Advancement was recognized for our effort on Almabases’s blog.
