Amazing Senior | Jeni Myers

Mar 13, 2022

Jenica Myers has been involved at William Peace University since her first day.

Stepping onto campus during her orientation in June of 2017, the Charlotte native immediately knew she was at home.

“I remember seeing the orientation leaders and thinking to myself, that’s what I want to do,” Jeni said. “I want to get involved. I want to do what they’re doing.”

As soon as she started that fall, she applied for three leadership positions and chose two: resident advisor and orientation leader. From there, Jeni went on to become student coordinator for the Student Involvement Office and is currently the teaching assistant and project lead for the Honors 100 class. She’s also helping plan and run events for WPU’s Diversity and Inclusion program.

One would think with all her leadership positions throughout campus, Jeni wouldn’t have time for much academic-wise, but that is far from the truth. The senior is set to graduate this May with a bachelor’s degree in Communications – concentrating in public relations – and a minor in Marketing, with honors.

“I always knew I was going to go in communications, but it took some searching to realize what concentration I would pursue,” she said, adding that she initially was interested in becoming a journalist after growing up admiring well-known news anchors and their influence in the community.

“Once I started taking classes at WPU, I realized journalism wasn’t meant for me; writing 10 stories a day was not for me,” Jeni said.

“Then I tried public relations, and that was more my speed. You get to work with your employers, with the donors of an organization and with people outside your company. You get to address the public and work with the media, and that’s more what I wanted to do.”

Her path into public relations led to an interest in marketing, which was a natural transition for her because of her WPU outreach involvement.

“Once I started taking public relations classes, I noticed that marketing and PR go hand-in-hand,” she said. “And I felt like I was already doing marketing through my work with the university as a student leader.”

Jeni’s leadership experiences contributed to her current passion and goals of working in higher education. She enjoys working with students and being part of the college experience, so a career in higher education was a perfect fit for her future.

Beyond finding success in academics, Jeni’s involvement on campus as well as enrollment in the Honors Program (and subsequent scholarship winnings) have been her greatest achievements.

“I joined the Honors Program in my sophomore year because I wanted to be part of something bigger than myself,” she said. “I thought it would also be cool in future job interviews to say I graduated from William Peace University with honors.”

She added: “It shows commitment, and that you’re not a typical student. It shows you’ve challenged yourself beyond what’s expected.”

Now looking upon graduation, Jeni plans to pursue a masters degree in higher education advising or student life, with the goal of eventually taking on a role as Vice President of Student Life at a university. And, of course, she plans to continue being part of the Pacer community.

“When I first started at WPU, I had so many people who influenced me from students to faculty to staff members,” she said. “They made me want to be a better version of myself.

“I hope that one day I can have the same impact on others that they had on me. I hope that I can touch lives in a positive way.”
