Navigating College Costs: The Clear Picture of WPU’s Affordability

Jan 16, 2024

Whether you’re a first-time college student embarking on a new academic journey or returning to complete your degree, the pathway to college can be overwhelming. Amidst the excitement and anticipation, understanding the cost of attendance is crucial. At William Peace University (WPU), we believe in providing transparency in financial matters, ensuring that every student can pursue their educational goals without unnecessary stress.

The Cost of Attendance at WPU

WPU’s estimated Cost of Attendance (COA) is a comprehensive measure that covers the total average expenses for attending the university during an academic year. It goes beyond tuition, extending to cover fees, housing, food, books, transportation, and personal items for a full-time student. These expenses are further categorized into direct and indirect costs, providing a transparent view of the financial landscape.

Direct Costs: Think of these as expenses paid directly to WPU. They include tuition, fees, living expenses for on-campus residents, and food.

Indirect Costs: These are associated with obtaining an education but are not paid directly to WPU. Examples include transportation, supplies, and personal expenses. Special Program Students (SPS) likely already cover these costs in their daily expenses.

What’s Included in the Cost of Attendance?

Choosing a cost-effective school is a pivotal decision that can profoundly impact one’s academic journey and future financial well-being. WPU stands out in providing an affordable yet high-quality education, ensuring that students make a wise investment in their future without compromising on excellence. Here are the tangible returns students can anticipate for their investment.

Tuition and Books

Full-time enrollment, defined as 12-18 credit hours per semester, comes with a tuition cost of $32,550 per year, inclusive of books. This competitive pricing not only provides high-quality education but also eliminates the need for additional expenses on course materials. In comparison, students at other private NC colleges spend approximately $3,500 for books, significantly adding to their overall education costs.

Comprehensive Fees

This fee, amounting to $500 per year, covers the student activity fee, technology fee, go-pass program, graduation fee, and ticket bank fee (on-demand attendance at local area events). It’s important to note that this doesn’t include the one-time First Year Orientation or Transfer Orientation fee. Health insurance fees can be waived upon providing adequate documentation.

Living Expenses (Housing and Food)

Living expenses are estimated based on the average cost of a standard double room and an unlimited plus meal plan. For off-campus or at-home residents, these expenses are determined through market analysis. Here, WPU’s cost of room and board stands out as more affordable when compared to other private NC colleges, providing students with a financial advantage without compromising on the quality of their living arrangements.

Transportation

Projected transportation expenses are calculated based on market analysis, offering a realistic estimate for students’ commuting costs.

Personal Expenses

Similar to transportation, personal expenses are projected based on market analysis, encompassing various daily needs of students.

Loan Fees

The Cost of Attendance also includes loan fees, considering the average federal direct loan origination fee for students. It’s important to note that this doesn’t cover the federal plus loan origination fee for parents.

Requests for additional school-related expenses, such as childcare, purchasing a computer, or sole occupancy, are reviewed on a case-by-case basis, highlighting WPU’s commitment to addressing individual needs.

Tuition & Fees Breakdown

For a traditional undergraduate student at WPU in the academic year 2023-24, the breakdown is as follows:

  • Full-Time Student Tuition: $32,550 per year (books included)
  • Part-Time Student Tuition: $1,085 per credit hour
  • Standard Double Room and 14 Meal Plan: $12,198 per year
  • Comprehensive Fee: $500 per year
  • Optional Parking Fee: $225 per year
  • Wellness Fee: $100 per year

WPU vs. Other Private NC Colleges – A Clear Financial Advantage

When comparing WPU’s costs to other private NC colleges, the numbers tell a compelling story. WPU’s tuition of $32,550 per year stands out significantly lower than the average cost of $42,241 per year at other private NC colleges. This cost difference alone presents an opportunity for students to invest in a high-quality education without shouldering an excessive financial burden.

Moreover, the integration of book costs into WPU’s tuition eliminates the need for additional book expenses, providing further savings for students. In contrast, students at other private NC colleges spend approximately $3,500 on books, adding an extra layer of expenditure to their education.

WPU’s commitment to affordable living is evident in the cost of room and board, which is notably less than that of other private NC colleges. This means students can enjoy comfortable living arrangements without sacrificing their budgetary constraints.

Changes in FAFSA and Financial Aid

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is a crucial step in securing financial aid for your education. This year, changes were implemented as part of the FAFSA Simplification Act. While some students may be encountering technical difficulties, it’s important to understand that these delays are beyond WPU’s control.

When filing your 2024/2025 FAFSA, be sure to add WPU’s school code, 002953. Delays in submission won’t negatively impact your financial aid awards from WPU or any prior merit awards you’ve received. Upon successful completion, you’ll receive an email confirmation from the U.S. Department of Education.

WPU does not have an exact date for when it will receive your FAFSA information from the Federal Government. Regularly check your WPU email for updates after filing and receiving the FAFSA receipt email. All financial aid award information will be sent to your WPU email account, and you’ll be notified when your award is available.
