Foundation Board Spotlight: Matt Chambers
The William Peace University Foundation aids and fosters promotion and donor contributions for the financial support and growth of WPU. The Foundation Board of Directors determines activities, programs, and benefits that help build this mission. We asked board member Matt Chambers what drives him to courageously support William Peace.
Matt Chambers wants to provide and promote opportunities for Peace students. Opportunities such as going to school for the first time or for learning what it means to be confident. It’s why Chambers, Senior Director of Corporate Project Development at Clancy & Theys Construction Company, has served on the WPU Foundation Board for two years.
“I want to give back to a university that provides an excellent education to a broad cross-section of students and does an outstanding job of promoting educational opportunities to many under-represented groups and first-time college students,” he said. “Education provides more choices. The more education you achieve, the broader the selection of opportunities that will be shown to you over time.”
Living Courageously
To Chambers, Peace’s commitment to building courageous confidence in our students is all about taking a chance. “It’s a willingness to step out and take a chance on something you may or may not have done, whether you’re good at it or not, done it before or not, have a fear of it or not,” he said.
Chambers said he remembers he had to gain courageous confidence when he was working towards his own education. “My college experience at NC State and Frostburg State Universities probably gave me the most confidence to do anything. Being on my own and learning how to become an adult, being accountable, being responsible, living on my own, moving out of town and out of state…all those things you do that lead up to a career.”
“College prepared me for learning and how to uncover how to do something on my own. It gave me the confidence to move to new places, make new friends, discover new talents, how to relate to people and build relationships. If I didn’t know how to do something, I wasn’t afraid to figure it out on my own.” Chambers said.
