#OurRaleigh | WPU Student Government Hosts Event that Brings Bird Scooters to Campus

January 14, 2019

Last week William Peace University’s Student Government Association (SGA) hosted a launch event with Bird Scooters for students on campus. There will now be multiple hubs, or “nests,” around campus where students can rent scooters, making downtown even more accessible.

WPU students and staff braved the cold to attend the Bird Scooter launch event, which included free scooter rides and complimentary helmets for safe commuting. The partnership with Bird will result in multiple nests located around campus for students to rent scooters. The scooters will make the trek into neighboring Seaboard Station and Downtown Raleigh even easier for students. Bird Scooters cost $1 to rent and riders are charged $0.15 per minute per of use–all of which is handled through the company’s smartphone app. The scooters are a fun and inexpensive way for WPU students to have access to everything downtown has to offer.

“It’ll be a great experience for the students, especially since we’re so close to downtown. So it’s going to be super exciting.”

Hugo Martinez ’20, Chief Financial Officer for WPU Student Government Association

The addition of scooters to campus means WPU students will have more access to the vivacious neighborhoods that the University calls home, which of course includes Downtown Raleigh. With just the push of a button, students can now be in the heart of downtown in just a few minutes, without the hassle of finding street parking or paying to park in a deck.

“We will honestly be able to ride through Downtown Raleigh,” Hugo Martinez said. “It’ll be a great experience for the students, especially since we’re so close to downtown. So it’s going to be super exciting.”

Riders are advised to keep to bike lanes where available and to avoid riding on sidewalks, and of course–to always wear a helmet.
