The greater Raleigh area is widely known as an east coast tech hub, with boundless career opportunities in the software and IT fields. With the influx of computer science jobs to the area also comes a slew of career paths for those with degrees in the liberal arts as well. WPU Students who are studying professional writing recently visited the University’s downtown neighbor, Red Hat, where they met with some of the company’s technical writers to learn more about writing professionally.

“One important aspect of this course, Professional Writing, is understanding what real available work looks like for English and Communication majors who have studied professional writing, editing, and public relations,” said Dr. Kate Maddalena, Assistant Professor of English at WPU.

Students sat in with Red Hat’s technical writing and marketing team as an immersive learning piece to their Professional Writing course at WPU. The course is intended to introduce students to work opportunities and the job market landscapes in technical writing and related fields.

“The class is mostly comprised of Communication and English majors who are interested in finding careers in public relations, marketing or content development,” Maddalena said. “This visit shows WPU students just how many opportunities there are for writers in Raleigh and the larger Triangle area.”

Red Hat is located just a few blocks from Peace and is one of the many companies that employs technical writers for marketing and content development, not only in Raleigh but around the world. Hands-on opportunities like these are paramount for students and meeting with real professionals in their respective fields is the best way to find their own career paths. Professional Writing students are only blocks away from finding out what a typical day at the office looks like for a marketing group.
