Trio of WPU Men’s Basketball Players Selected to All-Conference Team

William Peace University is proud to announce that three of its student athletes from the Men’s Basketball Team have been named to the USA South 2014-15 All-Conference Team. Senior Shawn Shaffer has earned Second Team honors, while juniors Nate Strother and Chris Thomas have been named Honorable Mention selections. The selections are historically significant for the University; marking the first-ever time a WPU Men’s Basketball player has been named to the All-Conference team. The WPU Men’s Team, which finished 13-12 during the season, including going 9-5 in conference play, finished second in the USA South and will play as the No. 2 seed in the upcoming conference tournament on Thursday, February 26.

“We are extremely proud of all of our student-athletes as they compete hard in and out of the classroom.”

Shaffer started all 25 games this year for WPU and led the team in scoring and rebounding, averaging 13.4 points and 5.8 rebounds per contest. The conference’s seventh leading scorer reached double-figures 17 times this year, including a season high 25 points in a win against the USA South regular season champions, Averett University.

Strother finished the season averaging 12.8 points, good for second on the team and 10th in the conference, to go along with 3.3 rebounds per game. He reached double figures 15 times and equaled his career mark of 21 points against UVA-Lynchburg, Washington & Lee, and Maryville.

“Every member of our team played a huge role in Shawn, Nate and Chris being recognized.”

Thomas played in 24 games and made 22 starts, finishing the year as the team’s third leading scorer and second leading rebounder, averaging 12.3 points and 5.5 rebounds per game. He was the conference’s 14th leading scorer with 16 double-figure games. Thomas was also the USA South Player of the Week for the week of November 24, after averaging 24.5 points and 10 rebounds in wins against Columbia International and Emory & Henry.

“Every member of our team played a huge role in Shawn, Nate and Chris being recognized. Having three All-Conference selections, in only our second year in the USA South, is a true testament to our players doing things the right way,” said Head Coach Claude Shields. “I am extremely proud of each of them for being the first All-Conference selections in our program’s history.”

“We are extremely proud of all of our student-athletes as they compete hard in and out of the classroom” said Debra M. Townsley, Ph.D., President of William Peace University. “Our students are hard workers and accolades such as this are a great testament to that.”
