SFS is an exciting new major for students who are interested in an active career in the health, fitness and exercise fields. Unlike the popular Exercise and Sport Science (ESS) major, SFS is designed for students who do not want particularly wish to pursue graduate school upon graduating, but to immediately start work in the health and wellness fields.
“The Sport & Fitness Studies major under the Exercise and Sport Science program, is an excellent academic complement to the WPU campus, culture, and location…”
The Sport and Fitness Studies program is designed for WPU students who are interested in going straight into a health, fitness, or sport related professional career directly after their senior year. Graduates will be be prepared for any number of careers in the fields of athletics coaching and administration, health and wellness coaching and management, and fitness and sport management.
The SFS major focuses on the necessary skills for students to work in the sport and fitness industry and ensures that all graduates have an in-depth knowledge and a holistic understanding of the human body. SFS students acquire a wide breadth of knowledge in the sport fields by studying the history sports, sport psychology, personal training, sport coaching, and strength and conditioning.
“The Sport & Fitness Studies major under the Exercise and Sport Science program, is an excellent academic complement to the WPU campus, culture, and location–in the heart of Raleigh, North Carolina–which is a heavily driven sport, fitness, health, and wellness market,” said Dr. Elizabeth Lange, Assistant Professor and Program Director of Exercise & Sport Science.
The major will also provide the opportunity for students to earn up to three professional certifications in Personal Training, Sport Coaching, and Strength & Conditioning. The SFS curriculum will prepare students to complete these certification during their WPU undergraduate education.
“The creation of Sport & Fitness Studies is an exciting development for the University,” said Brian C. Ralph, Ph.D., William Peace University President. “It is a strategic expansion for a thriving and important discipline, and its addition will help meet the growing demand for well-educated graduates in the region.”
As with every field of study at Peace, the SFS curriculum emphasizes learning-by-immersion, which means students have the opportunity to work directly with healthy individuals and special populations. Through internships SFS students gain hands-on experience with certified physical trainers, practicing physical therapists, and all of the various sports teams and organizations that call Raleigh and the Triangle home. Upon graduation, students are ready to work in personal training, sport coaching, health and wellness coaching, fitness and sport management, and other related careers.
