Pacer Profile: Donnie Leahy

Apr 5, 2024

In the dynamic realm of Esports, athleticism, and viral challenges, few individuals stand out quite like Donnie Leahy, captain of this year’s Rocket League team.

From Esports and soccer to showcasing his talents with a viral YouTuber, Leahy’s story is one of ambition, dedication, and a relentless pursuit of excellence.

At first, Leahy got into Esports due to his competitive nature and his love of video games, but eventually learned that both in real life and in games a lot can be learned.

“I got into Esports because I love video games, and I am addicted to competing in any form of competition competitively. Even as an athlete that played college soccer my whole life, I saw sports like video games,” Leahy said. “Being competitive both in game and in real life teaches you a lot about glory, grief, success, and pain. I’ve learned so much about life by competing and learning from other athletes and e-athletes around the world.”

As the captain of his Rocket League team, Leahy has helped his team soar to remarkable heights within the competitive gaming scene going 5-2 in NACE and securing the second seed for their division. Rocket League, a game that blends soccer with rocket-powered cars, demands precision, teamwork, and split-second decision-making qualities.

Leahy possesses those in abundance, said Esports Coach Coleman Arehart, but he also possesses an energy that others cannot match.

“Donnie brings an invaluable energy to the team as a leader. He is loud in a fun and uplifting way. The energy always changes when he enters the room and I genuinely think it makes a world of difference for the team.“

Leahy’s leadership has also been instrumental in fostering a culture of collaboration and determination among his teammates.

“He cares a lot about winning but he is nearly tilt-proof. He prides himself on maintaining his energy throughout competition, no matter the results. His energy is a constant that the rest of the team can rely on and feed off of.”

Excelling On and Off the Field

As a college soccer player, Leahy brought his competitive spirit and athleticism to the realm of traditional sports. Before his senior season, Leahy decided to hang up his cleats to finish his academic journey strong, also making room in his schedule to be captain of the Rocket League team.

A Challenger on the MrBeast Stage

Leahy’s talents extend beyond the confines of Esports, as evidenced by his participation in MrBeast’s Olympics viral video. Known for his extravagant philanthropic endeavors and captivating content, MrBeast provided Leahy with a platform to showcase his skills to a global audience representing his home city of Banyuwangi, Indonesia. Leahy’s appearance on MrBeast’s channel garnered attention and admiration from millions worldwide. His skills and athletic ability allowed him to get first in the hurdles challenge and the obstacle course, before being voted for 12 times in the archery challenge to have his target set back 10 feet per vote. He eventually missed this crucial shot, causing himself to be eliminated, but not without gaining loads of fans across Indonesia and the rest of the world.

Looking Back and Moving Forward

As Leahy continues to carve his path in the worlds of Esports and entertainment one thing remains abundantly clear – his journey is far from over. With each challenge he conquers and each opportunity he embraces, Leahy inspires others to pursue their passions with unwavering determination and conviction.

Leahy will graduate May, 2024 with degrees in Communications and Simulation and Game Design . He plans to eventually become a 3D modeler for a game studio, but may start with graphic design after college to get his foot in the door.

In a world defined by constant change and endless possibilities, Leahy stands as a beacon of inspiration for aspiring gamers, athletes, and dreamers alike, proving that with grit and perseverance, anything is possible.
