#PeopleOfPeace | Christopher Born, Ph.D., Joins WPU As Director of Immersive Learning

Jan 30, 2019

William Peace University welcomes Christopher Born, Ph.D., as Director of Immersive Learning, a role designed as part of the Believe in Peace Strategic Plan to facilitate immersive learning. Dr. Born’s duties will be to promote immersive learning experiences for WPU students as well as oversee the operations of the upcoming Center for Immersive Learning on campus.

As one of the four pillars of the Strategic Plan, immersive learning is an important part of the unique and engaging learning process that each student is exposed to at WPU. Over the years, the University has cultivated partnerships with the community and it continues to add more immersive opportunities for students each year. As these partnerships have grown so has the need for an office, to not only facilitate experiential learning across the curriculum, but also to share student success stories. That’s where Christopher Born comes in.

“The purpose of immersive learning is to bridge the gap between the theories students learn in the classroom and how they apply that knowledge.”

Dr. Born’s responsibilities as Director of Immersive Learning will be to continue building new relationships with organizations in the community, to create service learning opportunities for students with non-profit organizations, and to foster corporate partnerships. All of which are avenues for students to gain experience and build their resumes while they study at WPU.

“The purpose of immersive learning is to bridge the gap between the theories students learn in the classroom and how they apply that knowledge,” Dr. Born said. “We’re being intentional through the internship program and the immersive learning center, which helps students bridge the gap between their academics and what they want to be doing beyond William Peace.”

The Center for Immersive Learning, which is projected to be completed and functional by fall 2019, will be designed to be dynamic and changeable, and used not only as a classroom space but as an area dedicated to active learning outside of class meeting times. When not in use as a classroom, the Center’s space can be used by students as they see fit–for projects, group work or discussions.

The Center will even be available for the community to use as a collaborative space, which creates even more opportunities for WPU students to gain exposure to and become involved with leaders and organizations of Raleigh.

“We have the incredible opportunity to have the support of the faculty, the administration, the board of trustees and the president to invest in immersive learning and to build this center, and to partner with the community and its organizations.” Dr. Born said. “My office’s goal is to shine a huge spotlight on all the great things our students are doing on and off campus.”

“We are thrilled to have such a dynamic teacher and leader at WPU to launch the Center for Immersive Learning.”

Meagan Kittle-Autry, Ph.D., WPU Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs

With the addition of Dr. Born and the Center for Immersive Learning, the University has positioned itself as a hub of opportunity for its students as well as the community. Upon its completion, the Center should serve as a launching pad for graduates into the Triangle Area’s competitive job market for many years to come.

“We are thrilled to have such a dynamic teacher and leader at WPU to launch the Center for Immersive Learning,”  said Meagan Kittle-Autry, Ph.D., Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs. “Students will greatly benefit from the support and hands-on learning our faculty and the Center provide.”
