#PrepareAtPeace: Dr. Kristy Wynns ’97 Releases New Book on Parenting

Jan 12, 2018

Dr. Wynns is the founder of a parenting website and resources called No Wimpy Parenting™

Peace alumni are impacting the world of child and family psychology. Dr. Kristen Wynns ’97 recently released “The No Wimpy Parenting Handbook” which hit Amazon this past October.

In the book, Wynns dives deep into parenting methods aimed at empowering parents with easy tips and effective strategies to transform their homes. She is a child and adolescent psychologist who owns a specialty private practice in Cary and North Raleigh called “Wynns Family Psychology.” She and her team provide specialized therapy, testing, and custody services for kids, teens, parents, and families.

Wynns is frequently sought out as an expert on child psychology and parenting issues for radio, TV news, magazines, and TV shows such as “My Carolina Today” and “Daytime.” She was also the relationship columnist for a national magazine, All You, and writes two parenting blogs.

“The three facets of my life – my career, my education, and even my physical challenges – I can trace back to Peace and the idea that we can achieve any dream we want.”

During her time at Peace, Wynns majored in Psychology, served as President of the Psychology Club, and even played tennis all four years, along with her twin sister.

“Korrel Kanoy, who was my mentor at Peace and a former faculty member, was the one person I chose to introduce me at my book launch party because of her influence on my career,” Wynns said. “So, that’s a definite connection to Peace.”

Wynns also reflected on Professor Emerita of English, Dr. Sally Buckner, who taught at Peace for 28 years and recently passed away at age 86.

“When I took her [Dr. Buckner] creative writing class at Peace, she was so complimentary of my writing. In one particular paper, in one of her written comments she wrote, ‘I can’t wait to come to your book signing someday,'” Wynns said. “That compliment and vote of confidence has literally stuck with me for over two decades. It was very exciting to refine my writing skills in college and then have that dream of writing a book come to life.”

Wynns earned her Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in Clinical Psychology in 2003. She later started her practice in 2007, where she has been working with kids, teens, parents, and families for the past 11 years.

“The three facets of my life – my career, my education, and even my physical challenges – I can trace back to Peace and the idea that we can achieve any dream we want.”
