#PrepareAtPeace: Maya Bryant ’17 Crowned Miss Zebulon 2018; Set to Compete for Miss North Carolina

Jan 22, 2018

A new year. A new crown for Alumna Maya Bryant ’17, who was recently named “Miss Zebulon 2018.”

No stranger to hard work, Bryant has competed in the Miss North Carolina Pageant Organization since the age of 15, while also balancing school. Despite graduating from WPU this past spring, this latest achievement is no different as she is currently pursuing her Master’s Degree at Liberty University.

“I always knew one day that I would want to represent this organization as a Miss Contestant and have the opportunity to compete for Miss North Carolina and possibly Miss America!”

The Miss Zebulon organization is an official preliminary competition for the Miss North Carolina Scholarship Pageant and is open to young women between the ages of 17-24 who work, live, or go to school in Wake, Johnston and Nash Counties.

Bryant is the first Miss Zebulon to be crowned in 50 years after the program was reintroduced, a monumental win that came at the end of a strenuous five-phase competition against dozens of other contestants. Maya had previously competed in five preliminary pageants before reaching Miss Zebulon, and plans to compete further for Miss North Carolina.

“On top of preparing to compete for Miss North Carolina, I will be promoting my platform, Arts at the Core, by integrating the arts into Zebulon and the surrounding communities,” Bryant said. “This is the first Miss Zebulon in 50 years, so much of my year will be reintroducing this program to the community by attending many events in the area.”

“Peace showed me how to balance a full-time job, a full-time graduate school schedule, and become Miss Zebulon 2018.”

Bryant studied Communication at WPU and attributes her successes in speaking and collaborating with others to the faculty and curriculum at Peace. She also credits her career triumphs to the hands-on experience of her major’s required internship, and believes it to be the best way to test theories students learn in the classroom.

“My hope is that one day I can become as impactful of a professor as the ones I had at Peace. Peace showed me how to balance a full-time job, a full-time graduate school schedule, and become Miss Zebulon 2018.”

Maya will begin competing for Miss North Carolina in June 2018, and she’ll do it at no other place than the school she called home for four years. That’s because each year, WPU hosts all Miss North Carolina Pageant contestants the week leading up to the event, as they prep and ready themselves for the big stage.

Who knows? Maybe the home court advantage will pay off and Maya Bryant, a proud Peace Alumna, will be your next Miss NC.
