#PrepareAtPeace: WPU Students Win Multiple 2017 NC College Media Association (NCCMA) Awards

Mar 27, 2018

William Peace University Communication students have been recognized for their exemplary work for the University’s student publication, The Peace Times, at the recent North Carolina College Media Association (NCCMA) conference.

Dean Willms, Martinique Evans, Breanna Cary, and Cole Greene won multiple awards for their 2017 work as staff writers and editors for The Peace Times. WPU students competed against students from more than a dozen other universities across North Carolina, while also networking and learning best practices for student publications. Students attended the conference with Assistant Professor of Communication, Marti MaGuire, who also served as a contest judge.

“It’s great for our students to receive this well-earned recognition for their work in a statewide forum.”

“It’s great for our students to receive this well-earned recognition for their work in a state-wide forum,” MaGuire said. “As The Peace Times continues to improve and evolve, it’s important that students understand their work in a larger context and learn from others about how to continually produce better content.”

Conferences such as the NCCMA serve to engage and encourage student media operations across the campuses of North Carolina. The one-day conference is held at a different campus each year and features information sessions with panelists who work in the realm of journalism, such as WRAL and The News & Observer. Conference guest speakers give insights on how students and university representatives can improve their college media efforts. This year’s conference for instance, hosted a session on podcasts which directly coincides with The Peace Times’s plan to start its own student-led podcast this semester.

“Attending conferences such as NCCMA not only provides a valuable learning opportunity, but importantly assists the student’s development into the engaged citizens we want in our alumni,” said Roger Christman, Department Chair and Associate Professor of Communication. “With this being a very competitive state-wide competition, we give credit to these very deserving students while recognizing that it reflects well on the significant efforts and academic values we place on writing across all our majors.”

“Attending conferences such as NCCMA not only provides a valuable learning opportunity, but importantly assists the student’s development into the engaged citizens we want in our alumni.”

The Peace Times gives its contributors the opportunity to learn while being active participants in creating written and visual content for the WPU community. The staff is already putting together submissions for the 2018 NCCMA, and as the paper expands its efforts, its readers can expect a continued presence at future media conferences.

“I wanted our student leaders to both see how we compare to others and to learn from students, teachers and professionals from across the state,” MaGuire said. “I think they all left the conference inspired and empowered to bigger and better work moving forward.”

This was WPU’s first appearance at the NCCMA conference, which was held at NC State University.
