Don’t let our small size fool you – you won’t find a more active community than ours.

There’s no shortage of ways to fill your time outside the classroom at Peace, whether you’re interested in learning, serving, broadening your horizons or just having fun.

From one-day events to membership organizations, to team sports – we’ve got you covered and then some. Scroll below to find just some of the ways you can engage on campus.

Don’t see something you like? WPU has dozens of student-led Registered Student Organizations. You can join one or create your own.

Campus Traditions and Events

Annual Last Day of Class

On the last day of class, Student Life organizes a festival on Main Lawn.

Stress-Relief

The WPU Health Services team brings therapy dogs to campus around finals week each semester.

MLK Day of Service

Our Student Life and DEI teams organize a Day of Service each year. Activities vary, but involve volunteering in our community in some way. In 2023, about 30 Pacers participated in service at four different locations: Brentwood Boys and Girls Club, LGBT Center of Raleigh, Well Fed Community Garden, and the Raleigh City Farm.

Purpose at Peace

The Purpose@Peace Student Engagement Fair brings together academic majors, registered student organizations, community service opportunities and part-time job and internship opportunities under one event.

Traditions Dinner

Traditions Dinner, held in September, recognizes our past as Peace College in a special way. Faculty, staff, and administrators volunteer to provide a full-service dining experience to the Pacer community with an elevated, plated meal.

Holiday Celebration/Tree Lighting

The event includes a holiday dinner in the Belk Dining Hall, the Moravian Love Feast service in the Dinwiddie Chapel, the Lighting of Main Lawn, ending with a holiday tree and a hot cocoa bar and desserts.

Red Rose Ball

Decked in formal wear based on your unique style at a location in our beautiful city of Raleigh, this event is filled with live music, elevated food and a photo booth to commemorate the event.

Other Traditions

Some other traditions and annual events include:

  • Welcome Week – Each semester we welcome back our Pacer community to campus with a packed schedule of fun, entertaining, and community-building events.
  • Pacer Pride Fridays – Pacer Pride Fridays encourages students to show their school pride through their apparel each Friday.
  • Late Night Breakfast – Held each semester during finals week, Late Night Breakfast brings together over 300 Pacers for an event to destress and enjoy a favorite – breakfast for dinner.
  • Student Leadership Awards Ceremony – We recognize WPU student leaders for their achievements in academic and student life involvement and Registered Student Organizations (RSOs) for their hard work to build community on campus.

Other Ways to Get Involved

The Peace Times

The Peace Times is WPU’s student newspaper. Students create and write all content with advising from a faculty member.

Pacer Athletics

Athletics are an important part of college life, and WPU is certainly no exception. We compete for championships on and off the field.

WPU is a member of the USA South Athletic Conference of the NCAA Division III, fielding 18 teams in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s tennis and volleyball. Whether you’re ready to play or want to cheer on from the sidelines, there’s a spot for you at WPU.

Community Engagement

Enumerated in our mission statement, WPU students are called to community engagement.

And we take it seriously.

Community engagement is more than community service. WPU students, faculty, and staff are civically engaged on campus, in the city of Raleigh, and in the world beyond. From tutoring at Hope Charter Leadership Academy to providing aid at Love Wins Community Engagement Center to The Green Chair Project and Miracle League Softball games, you will find our WPU Pacers making a difference. Here are just some examples of how Pacers engage.

  • WPU’s Office of Student Involvement attends the annual PACE Conference each year to keep abreast of best engagement practices and guide students in their pursuit of becoming good global citizens.
  • The Office of Student Involved hosted Voter Engagement Week in early October 2023.

Student Government Programming Association (SGPA)

The mission of the William Peace University Student Government and Programming Association (SGPA) is to represent the views and to voice concerns of the student body by acting as a liaison between the administration and students. We strive to create an environment that welcomes and appreciates diversity and inclusion, promotes student involvement and provides educational and social experiences to further connect the Pacer community.

What They Do

The Student Government and Programming Association is defined as the combination of the Executive Board and Senate. There are eight Executive Board members + an Ad Hoc in the spring to assist with event planning. Members are elected each year during the spring semester. (Freshman class representatives are elected in the Fall semester.)

Showcase

Watch as WPU students share their projects and research at #myWPUshowcase

Twice a year, third- and fourth-year students share their research, work, ideas, and internships in an event called Showcase. There are no classes on Showcase day; instead, all students, staff, and faculty are encouraged to attend and learn from our amazing students. The content varies based on what students are doing, but often includes panels, presentations, musical performances and more.

Examples include:

  • Video games and a VR tour
  • Documentaries
  • A presentation on theatre audition techniques
  • A debate
  • Psychology and biology research
  • Readings from PRISM, the campus literary magazine
