Tanner Brown named new Chaplain at WPU

Jun 4, 2024

Tanner Brown is a second-generation Pacer, met his wife at William Peace University and has served as an assistant coach for the men’s Lacrosse team.

It’s only fitting that the next phase of his journey will start at 15 East Peace Street.

Brown (WPU c/o 2019) will be the new chaplain for the University, taking over for Dorrell Briscoe.

The New Bern native hopes to have the same impact on the current students as former chaplains Lee Carter and Briscoe had on him.

“Dr. Carter played a huge role in my spiritual formation and just helped me with everything at school,” Brown said. “I know Dr. Brisco did the same with the students here. Just super excited for the opportunity to be that same person for these students.”

Whether it be coaching players on the field or mentoring students on and around campus, Brown’s focal point remains the same – building relationships.

During his time as a coach, Brown has noticed how college students come in contact with a lot of people who can direct them, but it’s hard to pin down those meaningful relationships because students are pulled into so many different directions.

Brown hopes to become a stable face students can not only recognize, but trust as well, two things he believes ministry and coaching are all about.

IMPACT AT PEACE

Having the role at WPU makes it even sweeter for Brown.

His mom went to WPU and convinced him to take a tour when he was in high school. Brown fell in love with the place almost immediately.

He also fell in love with the former Sarah Scott and the two got married in the chapel on campus in June of 2023, a decision Brown called a “no-brainer.”

WPU is also where he developed a relationship with Carter, who was the University chaplain when Brown was a student.

“Dr. Carter had a huge impact on me going to divinity school (Campbell Divinity School) and getting to know all the professors and people here,” Brown said. “It really helped me realize that life is a lot about building relationships, networking, getting to know people and a small university like this makes it easier to do. It continues to help me day in and day out.”

That will help him thrive in his role as what Brown described as an “on-call” position for students who need counseling.

“Just really being present is the most important thing for a chaplain to do,” Brown said. “I’m just ready to be boots on the ground here and help these students. It’s a formative part of their lives so the more people (to help them) the better.”
