William Peace University Receives $100,000 Gift to Support Innovative Academic Initiative

Oct 29, 2018

William Peace University (WPU) has received a generous financial donation from Clancy & Theys Construction Company in support of their newest academic initiative, APEX – a Center for Academic Partnerships and EXperiential Learning.

Immersive Learning is one of the four pillars of the University’s Believe in Peace Strategic Plan. The Center is being developed to stimulate the immersive learning process, bringing together an “apex” of functions to begin collaborations among academics, community/corporate partnerships and experiential learning ultimately expanding access to transformational educational opportunities for students.

Clancy & Theys recognized the potential in immersive educational programs like APEX, but more importantly, they appreciated the true impact these experiences would have for WPU students, staff, and the contributions it would bring to the Raleigh community.

David T. “Tim” Clancy, President of Clancy & Theys Construction Company, stated that their motivations in supporting a program like APEX were clear. “We want to be a part of creating unique and powerful learning experiences for students,” [Tim] Clancy said. “This is a program that we believe is distinctive and important not only to the students at William Peace University – but also to the organizations and partners located in Raleigh and the region.”

APEX is rooted in providing access to more immersive and engaging educational opportunities for WPU students within the Raleigh community and beyond. Focusing heavily on internships, community partnerships, and study away opportunities amongst other cutting-edge, on-campus curricula, APEX will be the bridge that ultimately connects classroom learning and real-life experience, ensuring that students are prepared and excited for the future upon graduation.

“Investing in programs that provide new, unique opportunities for students is what we enjoy doing, and we value William Peace University’s commitment to continue exploring new, innovative ideas in educational opportunities.”

The Clancy history with William Peace University is one that stretches back decades. Brothers Tim and Joel T. “Tick” Clancy, Executive Vice President of Clancy & Theys, are connected to Peace through their mother who was a piano teacher at the University. Also, the company has completed numerous construction and renovation projects on campus.

“We’ve watched the campus grow and prosper throughout the years, and it truly has become a vibrant part of the Raleigh community,” [Tim] Clancy said. “Investing in programs that provide new, unique opportunities for students is what we enjoy doing, and we value William Peace University’s commitment to continue exploring new, innovative ideas in educational opportunities.”

In 2016, WPU began the process of developing a new strategic plan for the University. After receiving input from faculty, staff, students, alumni, neighbors and community leaders, President Brian C. Ralph, Ph.D., publicly unveiled the Believe in Peace Strategic Plan at the State of the University Address on November 14, 2017. The plan outlines WPU’s strategic focus over the next five to seven years and highlights key initiatives to move WPU forward in the areas of academics, partnerships, growth and identity.

APEX, part of the Immersive Learning key pillar in the Believe in Peace Strategic Plan, will help deliver transformational experiences; connecting the classroom to the world. Immersive learning prepares students to grow intellectually through mentorship, collaboration, reflection, and learning by doing.

“On behalf of William Peace University, I am deeply grateful for the forward-thinking and timely gift from Clancy & Theys Construction Company,” President Ralph said. “It will enable us to kick-start the launch of APEX and further advance the vital work of our already-strong immersive learning opportunities for our students.”

Through APEX, WPU strives to equip students to become leaders who are prepared to solve the challenges of tomorrow. APEX programming will officially launch in the spring, and the physical facility will open for the beginning of the 2019-2020 school year.
