WPU Alumna Megan Hoffner ’11 pours into alma mater

Oct 21, 2022

Megan Hoffner ’11 remembers the first time she visited William Peace University (WPU).

The Benson native heard about what was then known as Peace College through her friend’s grandmother, who was an alumna. Though Hoffner already had a scholarship to attend another school, she visited WPU to appease the grandmother.

When she saw campus, she walked under Main Building’s breathtaking columns to run into a student who smiled and opened the door for her. As she continued her tour, she met caring, welcoming faculty.

She left campus knowing she found a second home. And since then, Hoffner has kept her second home close to her heart in numerous ways.

A member of the Alumni Association Board of Directors, she first joined the Board in 2012 and served as Board President from 2017-19. Along with this, she currently teaches as an adjunct faculty member and guest lecturer and is an occasional Lumbee Nation speaker for the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.  She has also poured into students as a mentor.

Her involvement has garnered her recognition as a three-year Star Alumni. The Star Alumni Program honors WPU’s most dedicated alumni for their engagement in five categories: give, connect, mentor, attend, and volunteer.

Hoffner supports WPU because she hopes to give people the same positive WPU experience she had.

“My name may never be on a building but I’m hopeful that the students I’ve taught and the people I’ve interacted with will create an impact that lasts 100 years,” she said. “You never know how the people you help could come back and impact the future.”

Hoffner is grateful for all those at WPU that impacted where she is today.

When she first came to WPU, she studied music education. However, she switched her degree to liberal studies her senior year after the music education program was removed.

While on campus, Hoffner pursued a variety of extracurriculars to help determine her career path. She sang for the prestigious group Chamber Singers and served as a Resident Assistant, Orientation Leader, peer tutor, President of the LGBTQ+ student organization Spectrum, and more.

Her experiences gave her the tools to find her passion after graduation. Hoffner now works as a Human Resources professional.

Looking back at her time at WPU as a student and alumna, Hoffner has found a growing love for cultivating friendships with alumni.

“I have connected with alumni from across the decades because we all share a warm, fuzzy feeling of Peace being our home. Peace love is deeply rooted and infectious,” she said. “Giving back after graduation has given me more than I could have imagined.”

Hoffner even found her partner through WPU. While she became close friends with Janna Joyner ’12 as a student, they stayed connected after graduation. They have been together for five years.

We are always proud to highlight our incredible alumni. If you have a WPU story you would like to share, please reach out to advancement@peace.edu.
