WPU Announces First RN to BSN Scholarship

Oct 10, 2019

WPU is excited to announce a resounding investment in our RN to BSN program thanks to the generous contribution of alumna and trustee Lynn Kendrick Erdman `75, MN, RN, FAAN and her husband, David W. Erdman, BSE, JD. The Erdmans worked closely with President Brian Ralph and the rest of WPU Senior Leadership Team to establish the Lynn Kendrick Erdman `75 Nursing Scholarship in August of 2019.

This scholarship is specified to support the RN to BSN program and is the first of its designation at WPU. It will be available to a currently enrolled student of the RN to BSN program who is in good academic standing.  The scholarship is set to be awarded for the first time this year. The RN to BSN program, established in 2019, was created as a component of WPU’s ongoing efforts to create community partnerships and integrate cross-curriculum Immersive Learning opportunities – bold initiatives that alumna and trustee, Lynn Erdman personally champions.

“In the Nursing field it’s basically a necessity to have your Bachelors Degree, and it’s wonderful that WPU is answering such a vital need in our community,” stated Erdman, continuing: “To be honest, I’m excited! I love the new vision and the Believe in Peace Strategic Plan. I believe this is just the beginning of many steps forward that we are going to see in the next couple of years that are going to be transformational for the University and Raleigh.”

By launching the RN to BSN program last year WPU became the only Triangle University to offer such vital programming, a testament to the forward-thinking vision and dedication to the University’s mission to prepare students for the careers of tomorrow. RN to BSN Program Director, Kobie Leiper, PhD, RN, spoke about the importance of this kind of community investment in our University stating: “I feel fortunate that Peace alumni, like the Erdmans, are willing to invest in the RN to BSN program.” She continued, “These scholarships are a resounding testament to the belief of our University and our community in our nursing students. This gift will help a nurse achieve a BSN degree that will open new doors to opportunities that may otherwise have not been possible.”

As an alumna and Trustee, Erdman understands the difference that a Peace education makes.  Upon learning about the newly established RN to BSN Program offered through the School of Professional Studies (SPS) she welcomed the opportunity to give back. “Nursing has just been such a wonderful career for me,’’ said Erdman,  “It has allowed me to explore endless opportunities. It has given me the ability to connect with people in so many different ways, and I want to provide the same opportunity to the next generation of Peace students.”

Erdman’s impressive career consists of highlights including holding key senior, national leadership positions with four global health organizations: the American Cancer Society, Susan G. Komen, the American College of Surgeons, and the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses where she served as CEO.

Erdman has also served in top leadership positions with healthcare systems including Carolinas HealthCare System, now Atrium, and Novant Health where she served as the founding Director of Presbyterian Cancer Center.

While the experiences Erdman had in these leadership roles truly proved transformative to herself and her career, she states that much of her success she credits to many incredible mentors and colleagues throughout the years including those at Peace. “If I didn’t have the chance to establish such valuable relationships, I wouldn’t have been able to grow and be where I am today,” smiled Erdman.

“Even today, I still hear from former colleagues and mentees of mine, updating me on their successes, and that means the world to me,” said Erdman. She continues, “These relationships I have been able to build are the proudest accomplishment of my career, and by establishing this scholarship I am providing today’s Peace students with the same guidance and access to resources that changed my life when I was a student at Peace.”

This investment in our WPU students is a resounding example of the impact that our Peace alumni and community have on our campus. If you are interested in supporting vital academic programming and investing in our next generation of Peace leaders, please visit peace.edu/give today.
