WPU Announces New Majors: Exercise and Sport Science & History and American Studies

Oct 5, 2016

William Peace University is pleased to announce two new academic programs, Exercise and Sport Science and History and American Studies, set to launch in fall 2017. These new programs are designed to meet the interests and backgrounds of the WPU student body. Each of the programs incorporates up-to-date curriculum and are taught primarily by full-time faculty, as well as part-time faculty who are industry leaders.

William Peace University has long been recognized as a leader in providing work and life experiences as essential elements of each and every academic program. These new programs continue in that long-standing tradition by infusing real-world experiences, through the required internship and other applied, hands-on courses, into the curriculum to better prepare students for meaningful and rewarding careers after graduation.

The Exercise and Sports Science major prepares students for careers as athletic or personal trainers, coaches, teachers, fitness professionals or for graduate study in physical therapy, occupational therapy or other medical fields – areas that the Bureau of Labor Statistics predict will all see significant areas of growth over the next several years.

The Exercise and Sports Science major is designed to incorporate courses in Biology, Chemistry, Math and Psychology, as well as Exercise and Sport Science such as Nutrition, Kinesiology, Lifetime Fitness and Wellness, and Exercise and Sports Physiology. The 41-credit major is designed to be completed in four years, but students who elect to accelerate their studies may be able to complete the program in three years.

The History and American Studies major builds on the University’s experience as a liberal arts college and offers a supportive home and think-tank for students who seek to inquire into cultural, social, economic and political forces that shape the world we live in.

“History and American Studies will help students make sense of the world around them. A knowledge of history is critical for informed and ethical citizenship,” said Dr. Katie Otis, History Professor at William Peace University.

This multi-disciplinary program focuses on American history and culture while adding studies in Political Science, Anthropology, English, Religion and Theatre, among others. Students will have the opportunity to shape their major to their interests and career goals. For example, a student interested in pursuing a law degree after graduating from William Peace might choose to emphasize courses in political science as part of his or her history degree.

With these two new majors, William Peace University has added substantially to the number of academic programs offered at the University – nine new programs in the past 12 months.  This expansion of its academic programs comes at a time of growth and vitality for the University.
