WPU Launches New Major, Leadership & Nonprofit Administration, and Partnership with Leadership Triangle

Feb 6, 2018

William Peace University is pleased to officially announce a new academic program, Leadership & Nonprofit Administration, which launched at the start of the spring 2018 semester within the University’s traditional undergraduate studies program.

The major will also be launched within the School of Professional Studies (SPS), an accelerated degree program for working adults and professionals, in fall 2018. A unique and innovative partnership with Leadership Triangle (LT) will be featured within the traditional undergraduate offering of the major, where students will pair with mentors and learn hands-on skills from community leaders within LT, making for a one-of-a-kind immersive learning experience. The program also incorporates up-to-date curriculum and is taught primarily by full-time faculty, as well as part-time faculty who are industry leaders. The major, along with the LT partnership, was officially announced at a campus event on Tuesday, Feb. 6.

“Peace has been producing leaders for over 160 years and I am so excited that we are building on that legacy through the re-establishment of the leadership major. Furthermore, the creation of an innovative partnership with Leadership Triangle is very exciting.”

William Peace University has long been recognized as a leader in providing work and life experiences as essential elements of each and every academic program. This new program continues in that long-standing tradition by infusing real-world experiences, through the required internship and other applied, hands-on courses, into the curriculum to better prepare students for meaningful and rewarding careers after graduation.

The Leadership & Nonprofit Administration major prepares students for careers in community outreach, social entrepreneurship, executive leadership, nonprofit administration, and more. The major also blends traditional business courses, mixed with a focus on organizational development, ethical principles, and community service – all of which are designed to help students develop the knowledge and skills needed to enhance leadership potential in the nonprofit or civic arenas.

“We’re excited to launch a program under the leadership of Dr. Heidi Gailor that will benefit both our students and the community by connecting the two groups through immersive best practices,” said Charles Duncan, Ph.D., Vice President for Academic Affairs.

“The chance for our students to be mentored by seasoned leaders throughout the region is going to be truly extraordinary.”

“Peace has been producing leaders for over 160 years and I am so excited that we are building on that legacy through the re-establishment of the leadership major. Furthermore, the creation of an innovative partnership (one of our four strategic themes in the Believe in Peace Strategic Plan) with Leadership Triangle is very exciting,” said Brian C. Ralph, Ph.D., President. “The chance for our students to be mentored by seasoned leaders throughout the region is going to be truly extraordinary.”

“Our new degree program in Leadership and Non-profit Administration is in direct response to the needs of the greater Raleigh community,” said Lori McClaren, Ph.D., Director of Online Programs for the School of Professional Studies. “We can help prepare adult professional students enter careers as grant writers, volunteer coordinators, or development directors to mention a few; but most importantly, equip students with the knowledge and leadership skills they need to be successful in directly impacting our growing community.”

“It was natural for us to think about a partnership with William Peace,” said Jesica Averhart, Executive Director of Leadership Triangle. “The students have an incredible reputation. They’re engaged and located right here in downtown Raleigh, so they’re seeing the complexities of community already; they’re living that. When you take that and add leadership development skills, you’re talking about creating the leaders of tomorrow.”

With the addition of this program, William Peace University now offers 28 academic programs within its traditional undergraduate studies, and seven majors within SPS. Over the last two years alone, the University has added 10 new programs, showing its commitment to growth and an ever-expanding curriculum.
