WPU Student Showcase Returns

Apr 6, 2021

William Peace University hosts its 16th annual Student Showcase on April 13, an annual tradition in which WPU students  demonstrate their learning, knowledge, and skills by sharing their work from throughout the academic year.

During Showcase, students don’t go to regular classes, but instead get an opportunity to learn from their peers and explore the possibilities of other classes and educational paths. The event allows the university to “celebrate the academic and creative achievements of WPU students” in a full day of sessions styled after an academic conference,  says Dr. Eliza Laskowski, chair of the speakers and events committee, which organizes Showcase.

This year’s Showcase will take place from 8:45 a.m. to 4 p.m. and features 20 student-led panels, some held virtually and some in person. Examples include William Peace University 3D Modular Environments, Enhancing Learning Through the Integration of Technology, and Students Make History: Senior Thesis Presentations.

Musical theatre students will perform, and students will share their internship experiences in a virtual panel. Academic award winners for various disciplines will be named virtually. Find a detailed schedule and links to sessions at bit.ly/WPUShowcase

The panels allow students to delve into subjects and classes they may not have otherwise interacted with, and to get a more in depth look at their own field of study. While many presenters are upperclassmen, Laskowski says all students benefit.

For students who have not yet gotten to present, they can see the potential of what they can do,” says Laskowski. “It is very inspiring for our first and second year students to see what they could potentially do one day.”

Nolan Davis, a senior majoring in communications who will participate in a session with a marketing class this year, says he learned a lot attending the event in the past.

“I think students definitely learn a lot,” says “I think it really shows the fruits of their labors throughout the year.”

Edgar Arrieta Reyes, a junior psychology major at WPU, was a first-year student when his psychology professor suggested he present a paper that he wrote on the psychology of Virginia Woolf. He said the experience helped him improve his presentation skills. He was also able to visit various panels and learn about the different majors available at WPU.

“It’s a good way to get out there,” says Reyes. “It’s just a way to just show your skills.”

Showcase gives students an opportunity to connect with their peers and professors, and learn more about other projects occurring on campus.

Julia Walsh has participated in Showcase multiple times; she performed a song from the show Assassins, the broadway musical Hair, and even presented an improvisational skit. She also enjoyed learning about other projects on campus.

“I think it’s one of the best things that Peace does,” says Walsh, a senior musical theatre major. “It gets people involved and that’s what all campuses want.”

Showcase is returning to Peace after a year off due to the COVID-19 pandemic with safety precautions in place including socially distanced sessions. Visitors will only be able to participate online.

“I’m looking forward to the fact that we are managing to make Showcase work,” says Laskowski. “Despite all of the challenges of this academic year, we are figuring out how to have this day to celebrate our students this year.”
