WPU Students Can Register Now for Summer ‘23 Study Abroad

Dec 6, 2022

College is full of new experiences, one of which might be studying abroad. William Peace University students can inquire now about enrolling in a study abroad for next summer, 2023.

The International Studies program is led by Adair Robertson, a retired mathematics professor, and Kathy Corley, an adjunct professor.

Immersive learning is one of the core tenants of education at WPU. Study abroad fits right in that, Robertson said. She has been leading students abroad for the past 20 years. She returned from retirement to continue working with the program because she believes students should have that travel experience.

“I think it’s the ultimate immersive learning to go to another culture,” she said.

The study abroad program was suspended for 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic. However, it resumed in 2022 with a trip to Italy, Hungary, and Slovenia for 11 days. Students who participate must keep a journal of their experiences abroad and write a reflective paper upon returning home.

The group visits cultural and political sites as well as museums and schools. The goal is to immerse students in the native culture of the land.

In May 2023, the program will offer three travel destinations: Japan, hosted by Professor Roger Christman. London and Paris, hosted by Professors Matt Hodge and Elizabeth Kusko, and Costa Rica, hosted by Professors Lisa Bonner and Patrick Meyer.

“In Japan, we’re going to visit a simulation and game design school, so we can see how they do things there,” said Robertson. “The students will also go into Tokyo and play games that haven’t even been released yet.”

Other activities planned for Japan include visiting the resting place of Buddha and participating in a Japanese tea ceremony.

Any WPU professor can lead study abroad, and Robertson welcomes creative freedom when planning upcoming trips. It allows faculty to work together to create enticing programs and lasting memories.

The cost of study abroad trips varies by location, usually falling between $2,500 to $5,000. Scholarships are available for students who have a GPA of 2.6 or higher. The Ragland Scholarship offers $1,200, roughly 20 percent of the program’s cost.

Robertson said some students are unaware of the options or cannot afford the program while in school. Therefore, they have invited alums to accompany students on these trips. Students are also encouraged to bring their parents, siblings, and children.

Upcoming Information Sessions for the THREE Study Abroad Programs coming up this May & June 2023 (1) Costa Rica, (2) Japan, & (3) London & Paris.  We will conduct these Info Sessions on Tuesday, January 10th and Tuesday, January 17th at 3:30pm in Flowe 111.  The deadline for the 2023 Study Abroad Programs is January 30. Students who are interested should contact Adair Robertson or Kathy Corley.
