WPU, Vance-Granville, and Fayetteville Tech Share the Stage in Theatre Articulation Agreements

Sep 15, 2017

William Peace University, Vance-Granville Community College, and Fayetteville Tech Community College have partnered to further theatre education in the Triangle and beyond. WPU, VGCC, and FTCC have signed articulation agreements that will open a pathway for graduates of Vance-Granville and Fayetteville Tech’s theatre programs to pursue a Bachelors of Arts in Theatre, Theatre Education, Arts Administration, or a Bachelors of Fine Arts in Musical Theatre at WPU. The agreements will provide VGCC and FTCC graduates guaranteed admission to the University and up to 61 credit hours of coursework towards their BA or BFA degree.

WPU President Brian C. Ralph, Ph.D., signed the agreements, which went into effect in spring 2017.

“Theatre in the Triangle is flourishing, and with that comes a multitude of opportunities for our graduates, on and off the stage.”

WPU is the only institution in the Raleigh area to offer degrees in Theatre Education and Arts Administration. Students are taught by faculty who continue to work in the performance industry, providing a true experiential learning experience few colleges can offer. Theatre students at WPU learn from faculty and guest artists whose résumés span Broadway, Off-Broadway, national tours, professional regional theatre, as well as work in television, film, and radio.

The WPU theatre faculty also boast strong academic achievements, such as numerous publications, research presentations at prestigious international conferences, and teaching awards. The theatre curriculum is designed to be competitive and to create confident, marketable, and self-assessing artists.

“Theatre in the Triangle is flourishing,” said Dr. Charles Duncan, Vice President for Academic Affairs. “And with that, comes a multitude of opportunities for our graduates, on and off the stage. It’s been wonderful to see how successful WPU has been in placing theatre graduates into very exciting careers.”

The articulation agreement with Vance-Granville and Fayetteville Tech Community Colleges comes at a very exciting time for WPU as its programs continue to expand. The University has added 10 majors over the last two years, including two theatre majors (Arts Administration and Theatre Education). The addition of the two theatre majors comes as a result of the explosive increase in enrollment the department has seen over the past few years.

“We are proud to be the only university in Raleigh to offer these art degrees. It’s a natural conclusion that WPU should be that next step for these students.”

WPU has accepted transfer students into its theatre programs from many different community colleges, but with these new articulation agreements, students earning an Associate of Arts Degree at Vance-Granville or an Associate of Fine Arts Degree at Fayetteville Tech will have a clear pathway to successfully transition to WPU.

“We are proud to be the only university in Raleigh to offer these art degrees,” said Matt Hodge, Assistant Professor of Theatre at WPU. “It’s a natural conclusion that WPU should be the next step for these students.”

Both Hodge and Duncan have worked for almost a year to bring these articulation agreements to life, and they are extremely excited to see them take effect. Articulation agreements like these are not only mutually beneficial for both institutions involved as it gives WPU the opportunity to forge meaningful connections with other educational institutions, but they also allow more options for students who want to pursue a career in the arts.

“I am also very appreciative of the support that President Ralph has given to these agreements,” Hodge added. “This is an exciting new venture for not only our theatre department, but our University as a whole.”
